Eden Hill Primary School: Transforming an Autism Classroom Without Disrupting a Single School Day

Client

Dept of Education

Location

Eden Hill Primary School, WA

Project Value

$160,000

Completed

February 2025

The situation

Eden Hill Primary School needed its autism classroom transformed, more usable space, better layout, modern finishes. The room was outdated and no longer fit for purpose.

The scope covered demolition, ACM removal, new tile ceiling and baffle blocks, raised timber flooring, carpet tiles and vinyl, stud-framed walls, glazed doors, high-level window glazing, kitchen joinery, plumbing, electrical, and painting. A full interior rebuild on a live school site.

The challenge

Two things made this project non-negotiable on timing and safety.

First, asbestos. The existing ceiling sheeting and floor lining both contained ACM. Removal had to be carefully coordinated so no staff or students were on-site, with licensed contractors, independent air monitoring, and clearance certification from a hygienist. Full-time supervision throughout.

Second, the deadline. Works had to wrap up before the end of the January school holidays. Miss that window and the school year starts without a functioning classroom. There was no flexibility.

Our Process

01

Secure

ACM removal was coordinated with the school to ensure no staff were present. Licensed contractors handled removal with air monitoring and independent clearance certification. Full-time supervision throughout the high-risk phase.

02

Deliver

The building permit was lodged promptly to prevent any delay to the start date. Kitchen joinery had a six-week lead time, flagged to the client at submission, ordered immediately on award, shop drawings approved on time. No schedule impact.

03

Work

Full interior rebuild, demolition, new ceiling, raised timber floor, carpet tiles and vinyl, stud walls, glazed doors, high-level glazing, kitchen joinery, plumbing and electrical. All sequenced to hit the holiday window.

04

Clean

The site was kept clean and safe throughout, critical in a school environment where other areas remained accessible to staff during the holidays.

05

Handover

Delivered on time, ready for the new school year. Final documentation provided at handover. The classroom was operational from day one of term.

The result

On time

Delivered within the January school holidays. The classroom was ready before the first day of term.

Zero safety incidents

ACM removed with full compliance, licensed contractors, air monitoring, and independent clearance certification.
