The situation
Qantas undertook a national refresh of its regional airport lounges. Protek was brought in to deliver the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Airport lounge, a full refresh in five days, at a live regional airport, with no room to slip on schedule.
Works included removing existing carpet, plants, planters and furniture; installing new carpet, joinery and client-supplied furniture; repairing skirtings and paint; deep-cleaning the external tiled area; and providing a new Safe Tray for the Brita tap.

The challenge
Kalgoorlie is over 1,200km from Perth. Every material, every subcontractor, every tool had to be planned and transported in advance. There was no popping back to the depot if something was missing.
The five-day program also had to comply with BGIS, Qantas, and Airport Authority HSEQ systems, all personnel completed Avetta and Hammertech inductions before setting foot on site, with SWMS reviewed and approved upfront.
Then the unplanned stuff hit. Furniture delivery needed far more coordination than scoped, liaising with suppliers for off-peak delivery windows, hiring a forklift, handling delays. When the existing crockery hadn’t been relocated as agreed, Protek simply moved it rather than raising a delay. Two out-of-scope doors were also painted to lift the final finish.
Our Process
01
Secure
All personnel completed Avetta and Hammertech inductions before mobilisation. SWMS reviewed and approved in Hammertech. Continuous communication with subcontractors ensured documentation was in on time.
02
Deliver
Long lead-time materials were procured and transported from Perth in advance. Furniture delivery was coordinated around airport operating hours. Forklift hired to unload. When items weren’t at the depot, Protek collected them using their own truck.
03
Work
Full lounge refresh completed in five days, new carpet, joinery, furniture install, skirting repairs, paint, external tile clean, and Brita Safe Tray. Two additional doors painted out of scope to lift the finished result.
04
Clean
Site kept clean and compliant throughout, critical in a live airport lounge environment with ongoing passenger use in adjacent areas.
05
Handover
Project completed on time, to scope. The client was extremely satisfied. No financial surprises.
