The situation

Welshpool Bus Depot needed its workshop bathroom, locker room, lunchroom and office upgraded. The spaces needed a fresher look and had to meet all current compliance requirements. The scope covered demolition of existing internal areas, floor preparation, epoxy and vinyl flooring, new internal doors and hardware, roller blinds, lockers, bench seating, tiled ceilings in the workshop and store office, electrical and plumbing amendments, tiling make-good, and painting.

The challenge

Welshpool is an extremely busy operational bus depot. The works had to happen around depot staff without disrupting daily operations. Safe access, clear communication and careful staging were essential.

When the existing vinyl flooring was lifted, moisture was identified on the substrate. A moisture test confirmed a moisture barrier would be required before the new flooring could go down.

How we approached it

We assessed the depot’s daily operations before starting so we understood how the spaces were used and where the pressure points were. Exclusion zones were set up with clear signage so depot staff knew where they could and couldn’t go. Both the client and on-site managers were kept informed throughout so everyone could plan around the works and communicate to their teams.

When the moisture issue was identified under the vinyl, it was flagged to the client immediately. A moisture test was carried out, a variation raised for the moisture barrier, and the additional scope was approved and incorporated without delay.

Through planning, flexibility and coordinated trade scheduling by Site Supervisor Steve Callahan, the project was completed in four weeks against a planned seven. Three weeks ahead of schedule, within budget, and the depot ran normally the whole time.
